Job Overview:
We are looking for a Technical Plumbing and Drainage Manager to provide high-level expertise in plumbing and drainage and to support field engineers, supervisors, coordinators, and account managers.

This role serves as a central technical authority within the business, providing practical guidance, troubleshooting support, technical assurance, and forward-looking job planning to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard.

This is an office-based technical leadership and support role. It does not involve full direct line management of field operatives.

Role Overview:
The Technical Manager will:
  • Provide real-time technical advice to engineers in the field.
  • Support complex diagnostics and problem-solving.
  • Review and prepare upcoming works to ensure the correct equipment, labour, and methodology is in place.
  • Conduct post-job technical reviews to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Work closely with Supervisors to support training and development planning.
  • Provide technical reassurance and explanation to clients where required.
  • Support continuous technical improvement across the business.
  • Be required to attend or support staff meetings relating to absence, conduct, or capability, where appropriate, to ensure continuity of management cover.

Key Responsibilities:
Technical Support & Live Problem Solving:
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex plumbing and drainage queries.
  • Provide remote troubleshooting support to engineers during live jobs.
  • Assist in identifying root causes of recurring issues.
  • Advise on best-practice repair methods and first-time-fix solutions.
  • Provide clear, practical guidance under time-sensitive conditions.
  • As part of the management team, the Technical Manager will participate in an out-of-hours on-call Rota, providing telephone support and technical guidance when required.

Forward Job Planning & Technical Preparation:
  • Review upcoming and complex jobs in advance to ensure work is technically viable and properly scoped.
  • Confirm appropriate equipment, materials, access requirements, and specialist resources are identified ahead of attendance.
  • Work with coordinators and supervisors to reduce avoidable return visits.
  • Identify potential risks or technical challenges before works commence.

Post-Job Technical Review & Quality Assurance:
  • Review completed works to ensure adequate supporting evidence is recorded (including photographs and documentation).
  • Validate technical recommendations made by engineers.
  • Identify patterns in repeat visits, misdiagnosis, or incomplete reporting.
  • Work closely with Supervisors to address recurring technical issues.
  • Provide feedback to support improvement in reporting quality and technical accuracy.

Collaboration With Supervisors – Training & Development:
  • Work alongside Field Supervisors to identify technical skill gaps within the workforce.
  • Contribute to structured training plans and development pathways.
  • Participate in induction processes, particularly the technical onboarding of new engineers.
  • Support the creation of technical guidance materials and best-practice documentation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for group training sessions where required.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:
  • Within the scope of technical expertise, the Technical Manager will:
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure work complies with relevant health and safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Identify technical practices that may pose safety risks and recommend corrective action.
  • Support safe systems of work from a technical perspective.
  • Contribute to risk assessment processes relating to specialist or complex works.
  • Assist in reviewing technical incidents where engineering practice is a contributing factor.

Client & Stakeholder Communication:
  • Speak directly with clients when necessary to explain technical findings, recommendations, and solutions.
  • Provide clear, professional explanations of complex plumbing and drainage issues.
  • Support account managers in resolving technically sensitive complaints or queries.
  • Represent the company’s technical expertise in a confident and solution-focused manner.

Technical Research & Development:
  • Stay up to date with innovations, regulations, and best practices within the plumbing and drainage sector.
  • Evaluate new equipment, materials, and methods before business implementation.
  • Provide technical input on supplier selection and product suitability.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

Experience & Qualifications:
  • Extensive technical experience in the plumbing and drainage industry (ideally 10+ years).
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding capability.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring engineers in a technical capacity.
  • Experience working within an office-based or administrative environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of drainage systems, plumbing installations, and reactive repair works.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK regulations and industry standards.
  • Proficient in MS Office and digital job management systems.
